The kiln site at Sisattanak has been known for more than twenty years, but few comprehensive records existed on the wares and there was almost no information on the kilns first seen in 1970. More crossdraft kilns were discovered during 1989, and one of them (VS8) was excavated. Even though a kiln topology for the site has yet to be determined by further excavation, it is already clear that the Vientiane kilns differ substantially from kilns found elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Stoneware ceramics recovered from the excavation included domestic wares, architectural fittings, and pipes, both glazed and unglazed. They were generally similar to those described in earlier publications, but have been classified and analyzed in greater detail, especially in respect of the pipes.
